| We don't have a specific movie forum, but I wanted to post about Star Trek Into Darkness. As soon as anybody else has seen it and the various twists and turns that Abrams has thrown in, let's talk. | |

| I thought the acting was great. Cumberbatch was a much better villain than Bana could hope to be. Now, for some particulars. This is gonna get spoilery: - Spoiler:
The Enterprise was submerged on Nibiru... why? What's wrong with hiding, say, in orbit?
I liked the reference to Section 31.
So a wanted terrorist has left you with a transwarp transporter and his coordinates. While it doesn't fit with Admiral Marcus' plans, why wouldn't someone suggest beaming, say, 72 torpedoes to that location? Also, Kronos is exactly where Marcus would have wanted him to go, you'd think Khan would realize that.
I liked the fact that they acquired the shuttle during "the Mudd incident."
I liked the look of the Klingon, and - I think - a new style of bat'leth.
Realtime communication from Kronos to Earth, and to a handheld communicator, no less?
Abrams took all the criticisms of his excessive use of lens flare to mean that he should do even more. For example, when Carol was talking to her father, I could barely see her.
The whole ending went well beyond homage, and right into "cut and paste." Spock's "Khaaaaaan!" ranks right up there with Vader's "Nooooooooo!" in terms of unintentional humor.
Finally, Bones was frantic to get Khan back to the Enterprise to save Kirk, when there were already 72 genetic supermen already onboard. Including the one Bones had just defrosted so he could freeze Kirk.
To summarize: it had its moments, and its problems. Not worse than the original, but not particularly better, either.

| One more thing: - Spoiler:
Enterprise was just inside Klingon space when Vengeance showed up. Kirk orders them to go to warp, and manages to run for, what - five minutes? two minutes? - before being blasted out of warp. Which was enough time for them to make it back into Earth orbit. That's just sloppy writing/directing.

| Tom, - Spoiler:
the travel times at warp are my main nitpick with Abrams' version of Star Trek. The original series and all subsequent iterations of the various spinoffs established that warp travel is fast but it takes time. In Abrams' Trek universe warp works more like a hyperspace wormhole jump than it does the Alcuberrie warp metric.
As far as handheld to handheld comms goes, I was just assuming that Kirk was patched through Enterprise's more powerful subspace transceiver. Once again, though, Abrams isn't letting established Trek reality get in the way of telling his story.
I also thought, "Uh, Bones, why do you need Khan? You just defrosted another Khan." I can only assume that Bones was thinking that Khan might be the only one of the supermen with a "healing factor", which is kind of sloppy thinking on his part. Why would the people who created Khan not make all of their ubermench super healers. That seems, to me, like a logical idea. They're designer humans, not the Brotherhood of Evil Mutants (aside from the fact that Khan comes off more like Magneto than he does Ricardo Montelban).
Speaking of Khan, I thought a guy with a name like Khan Noonian Singh would be Indian, not a blue eyed British Aryan. OTOH, Cumberbitch is pretty badass as Khan, and proved that by whooping up on a horde of new-style Klingons with what looks like the phaser cannon he took off a starship.

I would also add that Spock's "phone a friend" scene was pretty useless, and Khan's turning on the Enterprise once he believed that his people were safe defied motive. His beef was with Marcus in particular, (who was dead by then) and maybe by extension Section 31/Starfleet Command. Why betray the one normal human who had violated orders and risked his life to save Khan's? Kirk was probably the one member of Starfleet who was sympathetic to him.

| I've said before, and I will say again, JJ Abrams doesn't let reality get in the way of telling a fun story. Ergo, he and his team should be perfect for telling the next story in the Star Wars saga. | |

| Star Wars' "only hope" is the fact that they almost never go into the science behind everything, so Abrams will have less opportunity to screw up that aspect of the movie. I'm in no way optimistic about his version of SW. | |

| As long as Locke doesn't show up with a button for Luke to push every 108 minutes or else Sydney Bristow will cut Felicity's hair, I'll be good with it. Lemme put it this way: He can't do a worse job than Lucas has.

That said, if he wants to give Terry Quinn a role, I'm all for it. Great, now I'm going to have to photoshop him into an Imperial uniform...

| - Spoiler:
You reckon standard Starfleet forensic procedure is apparently to inject blood from a suspect into a dead tribble, then disect it and read its entrails? Great way to see the future, though it makes the folks at Temporal Investigations a bit nervous. It'll all be explained in the next movie, "Star Trek: The Quibbles with Tribbles."

| I figured it out: - Spoiler:
Star Trek 2 (Khan) x Star Trek 6 (Elements of Starfleet wanting a war with the Klingons) = Star Trek 12

| Star Trek Continues is the newest web series based on TOS. Up 'til now they've only done a few shorts, but they now have their first full length episode:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3G-ziTBAkbQ
The character at the beginning is played by Doug Drexler, who designed the NX-01 among other things. Sulu is played by Grant Imahara ("Mythbusters",) Scotty is played by James Doohan's son, and in this episode a TOS actor reprises his role.
The only negative thing I'll say is that no one can claim that the actor playing McCoy is trying too hard to sound like Deforest Kelly.
